Work has started on a £1m make over on a Grade II-listed building after investment from IT specialist Aspire Technology Solutions.
Heworth Hall in Gateshead – which was originally built for the wealthy Russell Family in 1730 – is to get the extension to give Aspire the space to hire an extra 40 staff.
Aspire has already grown its workforce by around 20 people this year and now has over 100 employees.
Turnover is also expected to increase from £10.2m to £12.5m this year and the company estimates that revenue could hit £20m by 2020.
The IT company provides clients with data centre solutions and delivers hosted services, as well as providing traditional IT support.
The extension to Heworth House will be made to the west side of the building. Work began last month and will be completed next summer.
Chief executive Nigel Begg, who co-founded Aspire in 2006, said: “Heworth Hall is an outstanding place from which to do business and we love operating from here.
“We take great pride in being responsible for a building that has been such a significant North East landmark for so many years and one which remains so recognisable today.
“This sympathetic extension, which fits perfectly with the building’s heritage , will give us the capacity to meet our ambition of growing our business from this location for many years to come.
“Although we have a London office and clients overseas, we are very much a North East based company and we want to be in the heart of this region.”
Aspire bought Heworth Hall in 2010. The move to the new office cost the business £1m and Aspire then spent a further £1.3m on developing a data centre on the grounds.
The company works with firms across the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Continental Europe. Its clients work in a number of sectors including health, retail, construction, utilities, and the motor industry.
Mr Begg added: “Our business, including our workforce, has grown significantly over the past few years and this development will enable us to continue that process and meet our all-important growth targets.”
